Artist In The Spotlight:.....Grace Aza-Selinger
Grace's beautiful abstract landscapes act as a form of sublime escapism from city life and a channel into the natural world.
These other-wordly paintings are transcendental, powerful and evocative and give a profound experience of joyous freedom . Her gift seems to be not just creating beautiful art, but to bring healing to the soul.
We wanted to know more about what inspires Grace, so caught up with her recently to put her and her artwork under the Spotlight….
Carol: What is the inspiration behind your artwork and how does it relate to your pieces?
Grace: I'm inspired by the natural world and the connection between nature and feeling at peace within yourself. I want to recreate that sense of sublime connection to Mother Earth and that feeling of belonging in my paintings.
Carol: When did you know you were going to be an artist?
Grace: I knew I wanted to be an artist since before I can remember. It was my dream since I was a child to create beautiful and uplifting art.
Carol: What artist inspires you?
Grace: I'm inspired by so many artists. A lot of my contemporaries are incredible people with such dedication and talent. A few names to mention are Isabelle Menin, Chris Rivers, Paul Bennett and, of course, the classics such as the Impressionists are a huge source of inspiration.
Carol: - How do you start your pieces?
Grace: I often work in an abstract way, allowing the painting to be born from a mix of the natural world, subconscious and my imagination and feeling at the time.them, or I use them as starting points for improvised compositions.
Carol: Can you tell us about your process?
Grace: I use a mix of acrylics, oils and blending mediums as well as sometimes dried flowers or collage to create my work. I take cuttings from nature and take photos to use as source material. I live near the Surrey Hills so I have lots of nearby inspiration.
Carol: How long does it take to complete a piece?
Grace: Sometimes weeks and sometimes months depending on how the painting flows. Each painting has its own very different journey. I don’t do a cut and paste process or a production line of paintings. A painting for me is a spiritual process.
Carol: Do you have a typical question that everyone asks you about your work?
Grace: People tend to ask the subject matter and I find the easiest thing is to simply show them my art pieces because my work is not that easily categorised being a mix of abstract and inspired by the natural world.
Carol: What is your studio like and where is it?
Grace: I'm lucky to have my own relatively big studio. It's a spare room we have in our house and has a lovely tree outside and natural light.
Carol: What do you like doing when you are not creating?
Grace: When I'm not creating I enjoy eating nice dinners out and heading to cultural hubs in the city to get inspired by other artists. My husband and I love a good series as well. Not forgetting my rescue cat Sydney who is great company for some downtime!
Carol: What is your perfect weekend?
Grace: My perfect weekend involves most of the above. A good walk in nature getting inspired, time with my loved ones and a decent cultural fix, like heading to Hackney or the new Design Hub in Greenwich. Not forgetting a decent series. My brother just created the TV show Vigil which I’ve really enjoyed watching.
