Artist In The Spotlight:.....Camilla Jane Gittins

Camilla Jane Gittins

Camilla Jane Gittins

Camilla creates beautifully calming abstract paintings. She is heavily influenced and inspired by nature and the essence of her surroundings. Her work is characterised by her love of layering and mark making and she intuitively leaves untouched areas of the cotton canvas. The balance and composition within each painting is so important to her. …let’s find out more!

Carol: What is the inspiration behind your artwork and how does it relate to your pieces?

Camilla: I am heavily influenced and continually inspired by nature. My paintings are sensitive reactions to the ever-changing landscapes and the connecting visible layers of land, sea and sky.

Carol: When did you know you were going to be an artist?

Camilla: I have been creative from as long as I can remember, hand sewing my first disco dancing outfit at the age of 5. I was only ever really interested in the Art classes throughout school, scraping through my academic subjects to enable my further education in Art and Design. After graduating with a BA (Hons) in Embroidery, I worked for 2 global fashion brands as a Creative Concept Designer over 9 years. It was an amazing career for my 20’s whilst I was still growing as a person, it took me to the most amazing places and it was exactly what I needed to build my confidence, work ethics and life skills. It is also the reason I now live in Amsterdam; I became a full-time artist in May 2019, it was the scariest and best decision.

Carol: What artist inspires you?

Camilla: Cy Twombly is my true love of all time. He was introduced to me by my History of Arts lecturer and I never looked back. I flew home from a 3 month job in Spain when I was 19 just so I could catch the tail end of his blockbuster exhibition at the Tate modern. I remember walking around the exhibition with tears rolling down my face as I love his work so much and seeing it in that scale and quantity in real life moved me greatly.

Carol: - Can you tell us how you start your pieces and a bit about the process?

Camilla: I usually start my pieces in nature. I immerse myself in the landscape, where I am most inspired. I use water from nature and I take with me a bucket of paints and brushes in one arm and a bundle of rolled up canvases under the other.

After painting the base colours in nature, I let them dry and take them back to the studio. I play around with compositions, sometimes stitching panels together to create new paintings. I then stretch them and add the thicker layers, scribbles and embroidery to them.

Carol: How long does it take to complete a piece?

Camilla: I work on multiple paintings at the same time, some take longer than others, some happen so quickly as I have a very loose and free style which can be overworked very easily. Knowing when to stop is the hardest part of my process.

Carol: Do you have a typical question that everyone asks you about your work?

Camilla: The most popular question is, how long does each painting take?

Carol: What is your studio like and where is it?

Camilla:I currently have a 20sqm studio on the outskirts of Amsterdam. My boyfriend and I have big dreams to build a beautiful cabin studio/workshop. He is a very talented woodworker so we can share a work space one day.

Carol: What do you like doing when you are not creating?

Camilla: I love waking and pottering around local design shops, cooking clean, healthy meals. Because my studio is so creative and messy (in a good way) I like my home to be organised, clean and cozy.

Carol: What is your perfect weekend?

Camilla: Here’s a bunch of things I love doing on weekends as it’s too difficult to narrow down one perfect weekend; Brunching, walking, exploring a new city, camping, painting in the wild, eating delicious food, being inspired and visiting galleries.
