5 Top Tips On Choosing The Right Abstract Artwork For Your Room
When you are looking to buy an abstract artwork for a particular room, there is always that “What If It Doesn’t ‘Go’ ” Moment!!
We have put together our 5 Top Tips on choosing the right artwork to put your mind at rest.
1. Take A Good Look Around The Room
Really take a look round the room to set the scene! First, decide where you are going to hang your new artwork and look at that wall in relation to the rest of the room.
Note any light coming in from a window, will it fall directly on the artwork (be careful with direct sunlight on an artwork you don’t want it to fade!), or is it in a darker corner which will need artificial light? Will a textured artwork catch the light? Would a brightly coloured artwork brighten up the room?
Will you be able to see the artwork as soon as you enter the room? Will you see it from another room or hall when the door is open?
Will you be looking at it from a different angle, for instance, sitting at a dining room table, from a sofa or bed?
2. Match A Style Or Step Out Of The Box?
We are so lucky nowadays, there are no strict rules for having a stick to a set theme in a room. Old, works very well with new!
However, you don’t want your new artwork to jar or be lost in the room, so, consider the overall theme of the room, for instance, If you have a Scandi chic theme then you might want to look for something with a contemporary neutral grey or monochrome tone. If you have a maximalist theme, then go for something bright that can hold its own in the room.
3. Are There Any Other Artworks In The Room To Consider?
Note any other artwork you may already have in that room. You may want your new artwork to keep within that theme or tonal colours. On the other hand, you may want to step out of the box and have a wow factor artwork to make a statement and bring the room to life!
4. Contrast Or Match Colours Already In The Room
Will there be a dominant colour in the room that you want to match or contrast? Are there pops of colour in the accessories that you want to enhance? Maybe you want to keep in the same colour palette as existing cushions, rug or bed headboard?
Of course, you don’t want to be too matchy matchy!...but it does give you a focus colour to work around.
5. Act It Out
Our final tip, if you are not sure of what size or colour would work best, is to act it out!
Cut a piece of cardboard to the size you think you want your artwork to be and, carefully, stick that on the wall with double sided tape or blu tack. Your eye will tell you if it is the right size. It is always more impactful to go for the biggest artwork you can to fill the space, but triptychs and diptychs work just as well. Make sure it is not too small, though!
When you have got the size right, then cut a piece of material or painted cardboard the size and approximate colour palette you are looking for and carefully hang on the wall.
Finally, 'Live' with this ‘pretend’ artwork on the wall for a fews days and see how it makes you feel. You can assess, would the artwork be too big, too small, not the right colour... or is it a good fit!
We hope that these top tips will help you choose the right artwork for your home.
