Anna F Macdonald
Anna's work explores the play between form and space, force and subtlety and consciousness and intuition. Influences of Minimalism, mid-century Abstraction, Abstract Expressionism and Japanese aesthetics are evident in her use of limited colour, geometric shapes and gestural marks. She uses colours observed directly from nature and then strips back the visual elements leaving only the essential.
Having long been fascinated by the power of white space and the Zen philosophy of ‘Ma’, which translates as ‘gap’ or ‘pause’ her compositions explore the eb and flow of energy through the use of tone and marks.
Anna says, 'Observing the shadows around me acts as a kind of meditation for me and contemplating the variants of tone often feels like a visual form of breathing. It is this sense of tranquility interspersed with surges of energy that I aim to convey in my work.'
Anna studied at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK graduating in 1998 with a BA (Hons) in Art History. She currently lives and works in London dividing her time between painting and teaching.
